Ladybird Buttons
Ladybirds (Coccinellidae) are a family of over 6,000 small beetles, also known as ladybugs or ladybird beetles. They have a flat underside and a domed back, and most prey on insects that are agricultural pests, such as aphids and scale, which makes them useful, although some varieties can be pests themselves. They may be coloured red, yellow, orange, black or brown with varying number/size/shape or spots or stripes: from none to 28. The buttons above have 7 and 9.
I also have two cards of Woolworths branded ladybird buttons.
Children’s clothing featuring ladybird buttons were advertised in print from 1966-71.
