Queenslandrail was rebranded as QR in September 1999. It operates local, long distance, interstate and freight services.

Back mark: ‘greek key’ design around the border.

In October 1904 a new shipping company was registered in London. It’s owners had been operating a twice monthly service from London to Fremantle and Albury since the 1880s in their ship the Australiand. They transported emigrants, and were to own five ships by 1912. The company ran until 1981-2.

New Zealand & Federal Steam Navigation Company

Gardiner & Co. London

In 1912 the Federal Steam Navigation Company was merged with the New Zealand Shipping Company, so this button shows both house flags. Both companies were absorbed into P&O in 1973.

Note on the backmark: W. Gardiner & Co was an Australian trading firm of London and Sydney,  established in Sydney from 1861, and merging with Sargood’s in 1926 (see below).
