Embassy

For those living in Australia prior to the 1980s, the brand Embassy needs no explanation; it was an ‘own brand’ for G. J. Coles supermarkets/variety stores. These date from 1959-1970, possibly from the mid 1960s. Although Embassy buttons were originally made by General Plastic (as with Leda; see yesterday’s post), they were supplied in this era by Beutron; note the the Beutron type card with free cotton.

The cards below show a popular style of button sold originally by General Plastics and appearing on various branded cards. They both date from the late 1950s and appear on rival shopping chains’ cards!
