50th Regiment of Foot

50th (Queen’s Own) regiment of Foot 1855-1881 by Jennens & Co. London.

This regiment served in Australia twice. The first deployment was from from 183 onwards as escorts to convicts with service in Sydney, Norfolk Island and Tasmania before leaving for India in 1841. 

The Colonist and Van Diemen’s Land Commercial and Agricultural Advertiser (Hobart Town). There were early references to members of this regiment in NSW and Tasmania in 1833.

Following service in the Maori Wars, they served again in Australia from 1867-69. Th above button is of the style worn on the second visit according to Cossum.

11th (North Devonshire) Regiment of Foot

11th (North Devonshire) Regiment of Foot 1855-1881 by Firmin’s Ltd London

This regiment was garrisoned in Victoria Barracks, Sydney from 1845-1857, apparently being brought in to control the badly behaved 99th regiment! They returned to England in 1857.
