Bigger and Better Buttons

A club member on a recent visit to Paris noticed a trend to oversized buttons. It will be interesting to see if this spreads here. This is not a novel trend, however:

The Australian Women’s Weekly, 25th January 1936 page 61. A suit “for the matron” with either matching or contrasting large buttons.

The Australian Women’s Weekly, 13th June 1936 page 46. “The cape fastens high to the neck with a huge button.”

Large and/or ornate buttons were a feature of fashions in the 1930s. My largest button measures 7.5cmetre, and is bizarrely backed with an illustration of flying ducks! It is probably made of celluloid.
